At Durham sport can be as little or as much a part of your uni life as you make it. What makes Durham different is that you can be involved on two levels, either representing Durham University in national competition or wearing the yellow and black and playing socially for Mildert.
College Sport
As with all activities at Mildert, sports clubs are entirely student run. Teams elect their own exec which organise training, socialising and events. These can range from little things in college to tours abroad.
All sports have inter-collegiate leagues with matches on Wednesday afternoons and at the weekend. There are also three floodlit pitches available to use throughout the week in the evenings. The sports available at Mildert range from standard team sports like football, hockey and rugby to others like rowing and ultimate frisbee. There is also the opportunity to start your own team if there isn’t one already in existence.
Clubs in Mildert are known for their ability to play hard, shown by our prowess at the top of the college-wide points table since its inception, and to party harder. Mildert teams hold regular socials in the bar and are a great way to bond as a team in a friendly atmosphere. The Mildert rugby club’s annual charity strip is a great example of the sports teams doing their bit for college and teams do their bit for charity regularly by helping the college DUCK committee.

University Sport
Durham is the premier sporting University in the North East of England. At Team Durham our philosophy is to provide opportunities in sport to allow exceptional people to do exceptional things. In this respect there can be few better shining examples than Will Carling, Nasser Hussain, Jonathan Edwards (Mildertian) and Andrew Strauss. If you want to continue to pursue sport at a high level, then there are few better places to do that than Durham.
The athlete support structure is also extensive. Students can access a wide range of services including strength and conditioning, injury support, nutritional guidance and lifestyle management support. We work closely with governing bodies of sports and the university’s programmes in basketball, cricket, fencing, lacrosse, rowing and tennis are all delivered in conjunction with the respective national organisations. Few institutions more seamlessly, successfully and consistently combine sporting and academic excellence.
Sporting scholarships are also available for high calibre student athletes. More information can be found at www.teamdurham.com
