Police Information

Here is some important information and advice you should know about Safety in Durham and the University police services.

Durham has a very low crime rate and is a very safe place to live. However, we do have criminals who are looking to steal property.

Below is some key advice for keeping your valuables safe:

Keep your windows and doors locked. Even if you are only leaving your room for a few minutes you must make sure that it is secure.

Small portable gadgets are often the item of choice for thieves, mainly because they are often left unattended near an open window. It only takes a few seconds for someone to reach in and steal your laptop/phone/ipod etc...

BE VIGILANT! Keep valuables locked away and never leave valuables unattended in public view

BIKES! Get a good quality D lock for your bike and make sure it is locked up in a well lit secure place, not tied to a tree with a piece of string in the middle of nowhere. Here at Mildert we have secure bike storage!

PLEASE don’t let people in to college if you don’t know who they are! Don’t let them in, and don’t tell them the codes to the buildings!

Safety when out in Durham

Please drink sensibly, don’t put your safety at risk because you’ve had one too many.

Try and be considerate to local residents when returning to college.

Police in Durham

Phillip Raine is the Police University Liaison Officer for Durham University. He is employed by Durham Constabulary and is based in the police office in New Elvet. He is a contact point between the police and the University.

Phil provides advice to the University’s students and staff and patrols colleges and livers out areas on a regular basis. The police office is located near to the student union, so if you ever need to pop in for a chat please feel free to do so (hopefully as students you won’t be visiting the police station for anything other than a chat!!).

Phil will also be coming round to Mildert to mark property and bikes so please bring along anything you want marking.

Follow him on Twitter (DurhamUniPol) and he will again keep you up to date with what’s going on in the city and what you as our students need to know. But most of all, if you need any advice please let him know: philip.raine@durham.pnn.police.uk
