Mental Health issues affect a huge number of students and there is much support in college and in Durham for those that need it. If at any point you need to talk to someone or your studies are being affected then please get in contact with welfare. In addition to this if you are worried about a friend or want to find out more about how to care for a friend with mental health problems then come and talk to welfare. The Counselling Service offers a high standard of service in counselling for any student who is finding that their difficulties are hard to manage and/or affecting their studies.

The Counselling Service is here to enable students to become more effective in their lives and overcome barriers to achieving their full potential.


The Counsellor aims to help you to explore and understand more clearly the issues that concern you.


You may feel anxious about approaching the Service and talking about your concerns.  This is normal.  Whatever your problem you will be very welcome and treated with respect.

•This is a new service improving access to psychological therapies in Durham and Darlington. Ring to be referred onto a course, (10-15 minute registration call). You will get a letter confirming place on course.

•Helps with Mental well-being, how to develop coping strategies using cognitive behaviour therapy. Generally there to ensure a positive university experience

•Is a course of 4 sessions, lecture style, don’t have to discuss problems or issues with the class, just listen.
