JCR Awards

When the submission period for awards are open, you will be able to submit nominations here.

President’s Awards

Presidents Awards are awarded to finalists to recognise their contributions to the JCR and wider community in the categories outlined below. The JCR President is responsible for collection of nominations, overseeing the selection of recipients, and writing the awards. Typically, awards are presented at Principal's Formal.

  • The awarding of Honorary Life Membership is the ultimate sign of recognition for a finalist who has made a significant and sustained contribution, well beyond the call of duty across all areas of the Junior Common Room. Those who receive this award have made a lasting impact on College life and are made a member of the JCR for life.

  • Special Awards are awarded to finalists who have shown significant contribution and dedication to the JCR, or to a specific area within it. They may, in their time at Mildert, have been a head of a committee/society and in doing so had lasting impact on the group and the people within it.

  • A Contribution to College Life may be awarded to a finalist who has not necessarily been a head of a committee, but instead have contributed to and worked hard to support the student community on a consistent basis.

  • Contribution to the Arts awards shall be awarded to finalists who have made a significant impact on the College Arts community. This can include (among others) theatre, music or visual arts.

  • This award shall be given to finalists who have engaged in charitable endeavours in their time at Mildert such as JCR Outreach. They may have also been significantly involved in Durham Students' Union societies. This award seeks to recognise a sustained all-round contribution across the University of Durham and the local North East Community.

Sports Awards

Sports and Societies Awards are awarded to recognise contributions and achievements in sport, in the categories outlined below. The Sports and Societies Officer is responsible for collection of nominations, overseeing the selection of recipients, and writing the awards. Typically, awards are presented at Sports and Societies Formal.

  • This award is presented to a single club to recognise outstanding performances both on and off the field. The club must be able to demonstrate: high level performances; the ability to develop talent at all levels; consistently introduce and welcome new members; have an active membership both at matches and additional events; and maintain a strong and welcoming atmosphere.

  • This award is presented to a single team to recognise exceptional athletic performance. The team must have demonstrated a standout sporting performance, and likely have challenged for (if not won) league titles. The quality of the league may be taken into account. Additional non-sporting aspects may be considered, but are not the primary focus.

  • This award is presented to a single society to recognise outstanding contributions to student life at Mildert. The society must demonstrate: a commitment to engagement and inclusivity, strong event organisation, an active and growing membership, and a clear positive impact on the JCR community. Societies that have shown exceptional creativity, collaboration, or development over the year will be particularly considered.

  • This award recognises a newly established or recently revived society that has made a strong impact in its first year of (re)operation. The society must have demonstrated effective leadership, strong engagement with members, and a clear contribution to college life. Societies that have successfully rebranded, expanded, or significantly improved their operations will also be eligible.

  • This award may be presented to either an entire club or a specific team to recognise the work done to uphold and strengthen Mildert Values. Examples of these may include: active student engagement, fundraising initiatives, awareness campaigns, or creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment.

  • This award will be presented to 2 individuals - 1 male and 1 female. It will recognise outstanding athletic contribution to Mildert sport over the course of the past year (only contributions in the current academic year may be considered). The primary focus will be on sporting contributions, but other contributions may also be considered.

  • This award will recognise one first year undergraduate student at Mildert. The award will primarily focus on sporting contributions, but other contributions may be considered and should be mentioned in nominations.

  • This award recognises a single event organised by a society that has made a significant impact on student engagement, college spirit, or external outreach. Consideration will be given to attendance, inclusivity, creativity, and overall execution.

  • This award will recognise individuals who have made a significant sporting contribution to a specific Mildert Sport. The award will be primarily focused on activities over the past season, but contributions from previous years may be considered if an individual has been unable (i.e due to injury) to fully contribute this season. Individuals may be nominated, and therefore receive awards for multiple different sports.

  • This award will recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to sport at Mildert. Contribution over the previous season, including previous years whilst at Mildert, may be considered. Contributions do not have to be sporting and may be entirely focused on non-sporting aspects. This may also mean that the student nominated doesn’t have to have played the sport to be nominated. Particular attention should be given to students in leadership roles. Individuals may be nominated, and therefore receive awards for multiple sports.

  • This award will be presented to an individual who has made a significant impact within a society, either through leadership, event organisation, innovation, or overall dedication. The nominee should have demonstrated a sustained effort to improve and develop their society, making it a key part of the JCR community.

  • This award is a specific version of the “Contribution to Sporting Life” award that is only available to Mildert Students in their final year. The award will be decided in line with the same criteria as above, but notably recipients must highlight a sustained contribution throughout their time at Mildert. Individuals may be nominated, and therefore receive awards for multiple different sports.
