Director Introduction
I’m Alanah, the Director of ECC. It’s my third year being part of the ECC, having spent the last two years as a campaign and conservation volunteer, as well as taking on the role of Head of Fundraising last year. ECC is an inclusive project that welcomes volunteers with any experience and knowledge - all you need is a passion for the Environment. We have various roles available from slightly higher commitment exec roles, to lower commitment general volunteer roles, suitable to anyone. Feel free to contact me on eccdirector@mildert.co.uk or message @eccvanmildert on Instagram if you have any questions, ideas or want to get involved!
Overview
ECC consists of two streams; conservation and campaigns, each varying in commitment and style.
Motivation
The aim of ECC is to help make an environmental difference on a smaller scale, aiming to mitigate and reduce the risks of climate change. We are strong believers that a small change can make a large difference!
What we do
Conservation
Our Conservation stream meet at various points throughout the year to partake in various activities throughout Durham; whether that be doing a litter pick around college or Durham, through to gardening sessions at old Durham gardens, with the primary aim being conserving our environment. These sessions are open to everyone, and are a great way to take a break from busy Durham life! You’re welcome to drop in and out of sessions throughout the year. You need no prior experience or knowledge so it’s great to get stuck into if you’re wanting a bit of a change!
Campaigns
In our Campaigns stream we run an environment club in a local primary school in Epiphany Term. We deliver sessions based around fun environmental themed activities, games and crafts, with the hope of educating the children on climate change. We also run social media campaigns throughout the whole year, as well as creating informative posts about various climate issues to help people stay informed and up to date on what’s going on and how they can help in the world of climate change! Campaigns are great to be a part of if you have a passion for the environment and are wanting to spread awareness. Campaign volunteers are required to sign up at the beginning of Michaelmas Term to allow us to sort training and plan for sessions.
Outcomes
ECC is highly rewarding. We strive to make an engaging and welcoming environment for all our volunteers; making ECC sessions a truly enjoyable experience. As a project, we’ve seen great results in our activities - with children taking part in our environmental club multiple years in a row because they engage and enjoy it so much. Children come out of the sessions with a greater knowledge and a passion for change. Our social media campaigns see great engagement and have been shown to help point people in the right direction towards environmental change.
