Mildert for Refugees

Director Introduction
I am Akshita Sehgal, a second-year law student and the Project Director for Mildert for Refugees this year. I love reading, writing poetry and travelling to learn about different cultures. Being a part of MFR brings together my love for community and creating safe places where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
Overview
We run weekly volunteer-led sessions to support displaced communities across Durham.
Motivation
Our work is rooted in the belief to help refugees by creating spaces of warmth, trust and community in a world marked by displacement and uncertainty. Areas across Durham are inhabited by displaced communities that are navigating the challenges of resettlement, and we aim to walk alongside them in this journey by creating a community within which they can feel supported, seen and heard.
What We Do
We host weekly 2-hour sessions during Epiphany Term where volunteers can communicate and interact directly with refugee communities. These sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging for all age groups. We do arts and crafts with the children, have a cup of tea with the parents, and chat with the elders about their experiences in Durham.
Outcome
Our support for displaced communities is greatly valued and appreciated by our regular participants. For our participants, the programme offers an opportunity for joy, connection and a supportive environment in unfamiliarcircumstances. For our volunteers, it is a great opportunity to grow in empathy and understanding while contributing meaningfully to the local community.
