Primary School Project

Director Introduction

Hi, I’m Carla, a second year History and English student. I’m German and English but grew up in the Netherlands, and I love reading and playing volleyball. I volunteered for PSP last year and think it’s a great project to experience the local Durham community, learn important skills and give back to the community!

Overview

The Primary School Project enables Mildertians to volunteer in local primary schools. Students volunteer as classroom assistants with children from the ages 4-11, or co-run fun and engaging after-school clubs for those students.

Motivation

Making a difference in education can be really impactful for the lives of young children, building on important skills, opening up opportunities and fostering positive experiences with learning. By offering a second pair of hands to an often overworked teacher, this project helps to strengthen one of the most fundamental aspects of a child's life.

What we do

Volunteers can choose one of two options within the project. Volunteers can choose to spend a couple of hours per week to help in a classroom of a local primary school, where they can offer one-to-one time with students. This can massively improve skills such as reading. Volunteers can also decide to co-run an after-school club and share an interest they have with the children e.g. football or drama club.

Outcomes

This project has successfully provided immense help and enhancement to local schools. Volunteers have been able to offer an extra pair of hands in  busy classrooms and increase the one-to-one time available to students. This has enhanced the learning and attention primary students receive, and decreased  the stress of often overworked teachers. The after-school clubs have provided an invaluable service  to primary schools, and have offered fun opportunities to foster interests and skills that will be valuable for the futures of the young students.
